When Churches Split

When Churches Split

by Kenneth Westby

Splits happen. There have been many, and there will be many more. They occur in all denominations and for that matter in just about any human organization. I experienced a big one first hand.

They called me “the Devil,” well, maybe not THE Devil, or THE Satan, but a bad hombre under the devil’s influence. I was accused of being used by the Prince of Darkness to attack “the church,” to cause a split. Heavy stuff. I was innocent of the charge and wasn’t pushing for a split, but what does that matter?

Who were the “they” to which I refer? The “they” were the human heads of God’s One and Only True Church, the OTC. They were the most important humans on earth, spiritually speaking, to use the proper caveat. More heavy stuff.

What was the crime that prompted my firing and energetic denunciation? Simply this: I questioned church practices, ethics, and doctrine and suggested reforms. In this I was not alone as 35 other ministers were of the same opinion on the same issues, and they too were fired. It now seems a lifetime ago.

Since I seemed to be a leader the devil label was pinned on me and great calamity ensued: The human heads of the OTC (One True Church) warned the confused and wavering brethren that this may be the end-time sign when Satan launches his attack to destroy…”

The Morality of the Sabbath

MoralityOfTheSabbath

The Morality of the Sabbath

By D.M. Canright

In this book, you will learn about the absolute morality of the Sabbath. It will provide a different perspective on the importance of the Sabbath. You will learn about the physical and spiritual aspects of the Sabbath that prove it is just as much apart of God’s spiritual law as the rest of the Ten Commandments. The body was designed for rest; in our fast-pace world, Godly rest will produce a harvest of results. Here’s an excerpt from pages 24-25:

Pages 24-25

“Thomas Sewell, M.D., professor of pathology and the practice of medicine in the Columbian College, Washington, D.C. says: ‘While I consider it the more important design of the institution of the Sabbath to assist in religious devotion and advance man’s spiritual welfare , I have long held the opinion that one of its chief benefits has reference to his physical and intellectual constitution; affording him, as it does, one day in seven for the renovation of his exhausted energies of body and mind – a proportion of time small enough, according to the results of my observation, for the accomplishment of this object…..I have no hesitation in declaring it as my opinion that, if the Sabbath were universally observed as a day of devotion and of rest from secular occupations, far more work of body and mind would be accomplished, and be better done; more health would be enjoyed, with more of wealth and independence, and we should have far less of crime and poverty and suffering…”

What Will Happen to the Next Generation?

What Will Happen to the Next Generation?

by Kelly McDonald, Jr.

“The past few years, two of the top ten shows in America were “Desperate Housewives,” a television show built around men and women cheating on each other and “American Idol,” a show where men and women compete vocally to be called America’s top idol. Meanwhile, last year, in August 2009, two Florida school officials were tried on contempt charges for saying a prayer at a school luncheon. If convicted, they could have faced up to six months in jail and been fined, but they were eventually acquitted of all charges. This is just one of the many incidences involving prayer in schools the past few years. Also consider some statistics: Between 1973 and 2005, over 45 million babies were aborted in the United States.4 Approximately 19.3 million children in 2004 were living with only one parent. Statistics show that 45% to 50% of first marriages end in divorce and that 40% of divorced couples have children. T.V. programming, recent court cases, and statistics on the family all indicate the state of our country.

Cheating on your husband or wife is glorified on a television show which just happens to be one of the top shows…”

The History of Sabbath and Sunday

The History of Sabbath and Sunday

By John Kiesz

This book provides a brief overview of Sabbath keeping from Jesus until now. It shows that there have always been Christians keeping the Sabbath from the time of the original Apostles. Here is an excerpt from pages 23-24.

“Of the Christians of the British Isles, before the mission of Augustine to that country in about A.D. 596, we note that they had not been in subjection to Rome. When Augustine arrived he found the northern part well-nigh filled with Christians and Christian institutions….

Those Christians were Culdees, whose chief seat was the island of Iona, on the western coast of Scotland. Their chief missionary leader was Colomba (borth 543), and he was an observer of the seventh-day Sabbath. On this point we quote a standard Catholic author, Dr. Alvan Butler, who recorded some of Colomba’s dying words:

“Having continued his labors in Scotland thirty-four years, he clearly and openly foretold his death, and on SAtuirday the ninth of June said to his disciple Diermit: ‘This day is called the Sabbath, that is, the day of rest and such will it truly be for me; for it will put an end to my labors’” (Butler’s Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Principle Saints, art. St. Colombo, A.D. 597).

Sabbath History Seventh Century to the Reformation

“Rome never succeeded in driving the Sabbath wholly from its dominions. We have reasons to believe that there have been Sabbath-keepers functioning in every century, some in the wilderness, and some in and around the Alps. In their time, they were known by such designations as Nazarenes, Cerinthians, Hypsistari, and later as Vaudois, Cathari, Toulousians, Albigenses, Petrobrusians, Passagii and Waldenses….”

A Second Look at the Second Commandment

A Second Look at the Second Commandment

by R. Herbert
During the 8th and 9th Centuries a great controversy raged in western Christendom: Should images of God and Jesus be used or not? On one side, the “iconoclasts” argued that such images were unscriptural, while on the other side, the ”iconophiles” argued that such images aided devotion and there is no harm in using them. The end result of this great debate is obvious in modern Christianity, but what was the position of the iconoclasts, and what can we learn from a controversy that ripped apart much of the medieval Church?

The Second Commandment, as found in Exodus chapter 20, is the second longest of the ten – only slightly shorter than the command to keep the Sabbath – indicating that like that commandment, it was a law that needed detailed expression: “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments” (Exodus 20:4-6).
