What Will Happen to the Next Generation?

What Will Happen to the Next Generation?

by Kelly McDonald, Jr.

“The past few years, two of the top ten shows in America were “Desperate Housewives,” a television show built around men and women cheating on each other and “American Idol,” a show where men and women compete vocally to be called America’s top idol. Meanwhile, last year, in August 2009, two Florida school officials were tried on contempt charges for saying a prayer at a school luncheon. If convicted, they could have faced up to six months in jail and been fined, but they were eventually acquitted of all charges. This is just one of the many incidences involving prayer in schools the past few years. Also consider some statistics: Between 1973 and 2005, over 45 million babies were aborted in the United States.4 Approximately 19.3 million children in 2004 were living with only one parent. Statistics show that 45% to 50% of first marriages end in divorce and that 40% of divorced couples have children. T.V. programming, recent court cases, and statistics on the family all indicate the state of our country.

Cheating on your husband or wife is glorified on a television show which just happens to be one of the top shows…”

Sabbath Keeping In the Third Century

Sabbath Keeping In the Third Century

By Kelly McDonald, Jr.

There is an ancient document called the “Constitutions of the Holy Apostles.” The first several books were written in the late 200s AD (Schaff, Phillip, History of the Christian Church, Vol. 2, p. 185). While the work is certainly not authored by the Apostles, it certainly can give us some insight into the late third century church. The writings from this time period portray the Sabbath in a positive light as a day of rest. In book 2, Section 4, Article 36, we learn:

THE RECITAL OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, AND AFTER WHAT MANNER THEY DO HERE PRESCRIBE TO US.

“xxxvi. Have before thine eyes the fear of God, and always remember the ten commandments of God, — to love the one and only Lord God with all thy strength ; to give no heed to idols, or any other beings, as being lifeless gods, or irrational beings or daemons. Consider the manifold workmanship of God, which received its beginning through Christ. Thou shalt observe the Sabbath, on account of Him who ceased from His work of creation, but ceased not from His work of providence; it is a rest for meditation of the law, not for idleness of the hands…”

(excerpt taken from Roberts and Donaldson, ed. “The Ante-Nicene Fathers: Translations of the Writings of the Fathers down to AD 325 AD”. Vol VII. New York: 1890. page 413)

Over 200 years after Jesus was on earth, there were Christians still honoring the Sabbath. They still considered the law a very important part of their daily lives. This is a reminder that there have been Christians honoring the Sabbath from Jesus until today that were not affiliated with either Catholic or Protestant churches.

The History of Sabbath and Sunday

The History of Sabbath and Sunday

By John Kiesz

This book provides a brief overview of Sabbath keeping from Jesus until now. It shows that there have always been Christians keeping the Sabbath from the time of the original Apostles. Here is an excerpt from pages 23-24.

“Of the Christians of the British Isles, before the mission of Augustine to that country in about A.D. 596, we note that they had not been in subjection to Rome. When Augustine arrived he found the northern part well-nigh filled with Christians and Christian institutions….

Those Christians were Culdees, whose chief seat was the island of Iona, on the western coast of Scotland. Their chief missionary leader was Colomba (borth 543), and he was an observer of the seventh-day Sabbath. On this point we quote a standard Catholic author, Dr. Alvan Butler, who recorded some of Colomba’s dying words:

“Having continued his labors in Scotland thirty-four years, he clearly and openly foretold his death, and on SAtuirday the ninth of June said to his disciple Diermit: ‘This day is called the Sabbath, that is, the day of rest and such will it truly be for me; for it will put an end to my labors’” (Butler’s Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Principle Saints, art. St. Colombo, A.D. 597).

Sabbath History Seventh Century to the Reformation

“Rome never succeeded in driving the Sabbath wholly from its dominions. We have reasons to believe that there have been Sabbath-keepers functioning in every century, some in the wilderness, and some in and around the Alps. In their time, they were known by such designations as Nazarenes, Cerinthians, Hypsistari, and later as Vaudois, Cathari, Toulousians, Albigenses, Petrobrusians, Passagii and Waldenses….”

A Second Look at the Second Commandment

A Second Look at the Second Commandment

by R. Herbert
During the 8th and 9th Centuries a great controversy raged in western Christendom: Should images of God and Jesus be used or not? On one side, the “iconoclasts” argued that such images were unscriptural, while on the other side, the ”iconophiles” argued that such images aided devotion and there is no harm in using them. The end result of this great debate is obvious in modern Christianity, but what was the position of the iconoclasts, and what can we learn from a controversy that ripped apart much of the medieval Church?

The Second Commandment, as found in Exodus chapter 20, is the second longest of the ten – only slightly shorter than the command to keep the Sabbath – indicating that like that commandment, it was a law that needed detailed expression: “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments” (Exodus 20:4-6).

The Miracle of the Seventh-Day Ox

The Miracle of the Seventh-Day Ox

By Bradley Booth

Nickolai Panchuck was a Sabbath-keeping minister in Communist Russia. He was arrested for his faith and refused to give up the names of his congregants. He was subsequently exiled to Siberia by the KGB. In this incredible, riveting story, you will learn how Nickolai kept his faith in God and the seventh-day Sabbath during the entirety of his imprisonment. His faith led to others believing in Jesus and eventually led to his release from prison.

Here is an excerpt from page 50:

“The first time Nickolai had been severely beaten by both Yuri and the warden. The second Sabbath they had locked him up in a box for 10 days. On the third time around would they finally give up, or would the persecutions continue?

Nickolai wondered how much worse things could get. He was sure that there would be another confrontation with the warden, and he dreaded it, but he also knew that he had to remain faithful to God no matter what. He couldn’t give up now. The Sabbath was a special blessing from God. With all of his heart he wanted to honor the sacred day and the Creator God who had designed it….”

What You Don’t Know About Job Loss Here’s what job fairs and career counselors forget to tell you.

What You Don’t Know About Job Loss Here’s what job fairs and career counselors forget to tell you.

by Sherri Langton

“December 1988: my last full month of employment at a large downtown Denver bank. A layoff wiped scores of employees’ names off the bank’s payroll, and mine was one of them. But I had a plan: Update my résumé, land some interviews, and find a job I really wanted. Prepared to hit the streets and find work, I hummed the tune “I’m living by faith and feel no alarm.”

But in time I did feel alarm — and other things besides, like discouragement, loneliness, and depression. No wonder: Severance pay and unemployment checks covered my bills but weren’t replenished by a paycheck. Businesses ready to hire turned me away or didn’t return my calls. I berated myself. Faith alone should get me through this job famine, right? I should be stronger, sure of God’s goodness to deliver. But some days I wondered if He cared or even knew what was going on…”
