House Churches in China

House Churches in China

by Paul Wong

“Among many Sabbatarian groups, there has been much interest and discussion about Sabbath-keepers in Communist China. The following is the second humaninterest article from Paul Wong, a minister in the True Jesus Church, which is a Pentecostal Sabbatarian denomination. He gives us a brief glimpse of the lives and beliefs of the Sabbatarians of China…. —Ed. §

The house church originated in Jerusalem when Christianity was at its infancy. Right from apostolic times, the gospel has spread not only through preaching at public places, but also through meetings in believer’s homes. After Pentecost, the disciples met in homes and broke bread “from house to house” (Acts 2:46). The apostle Paul wrote to the disciples in Rome to greet Priscilla and Aquila and also “the church that is in their house” (Romans. 16:3-5). House churches have been in operation throughout the centuries.

Generally there are two types of Christian churches in China. The first type consists of Chinese government approved institutionalized churches that are organized by the Three Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM). Normally these churches are also members of the China Christian Council (CCC). The second type consists of house churches that are also known as “underground churches.” These house churches operate illegally, that is, without the sanction of the Chinese government.

Before the Communist takeover of China in 1949 there were three indigenous movements that worshiped in house churches. They are the True Jesus Church, the Jesus Family and the Little Flock. Of the three only the True Jesus Church worship on the Seventh Day Sabbath. After the takeover these churches continued their worship in house churches and operated in a clandestine manner in many parts of China.

History of the Waldenses

WaldensesSm

History of the Waldenses

By JA Wylie

This important history book details the history of the Waldensian people (also called the Vaudois). They dwelt in the Piedmont Valley, which is in the Swiss Alps on the border of Italy and France. They were Sabbath keepers who were persecuted because of their faith. They refused to accept the doctrines of Rome. God did amazing miracles to protect these people.

1487 Pope Innocent VIII issued a decree or bull of extermination against these people. An army was organized and sent to destroy them. As they marched up to the Piedmont Valley, a mighty miracle occurred. Here is an excerpt from pages 50-51:

“A White Cloud, no bigger than a man’s hand…was seen to gather on the mountain’s summit, about the time the army would be entering the defile. That cloud grew rapidly bigger and blacker. It began to descend. It came rolling down the mountain’s side, wave on wave, like an ocean tumbling out of heaven – a sea of murky vapor. It fell right into the chasm in which was the papal army, sealing it up, and filling it from top to bottom with a thick, black fog. In a moment the host were in night. They were bewildered, stupefied, and could see neither before nor behind, could neither advance nor retreat. They halted in a state bordering terror. The Waldenses then tore up huge stones and rocks, and sent them thundering down the ravine…The papal soldiers were crushed where they stood….some [of the papal army] were trodden to death; others were rolled over the precipice and crushed on the rocks below or drowned in the torrent, and so perished miserably.”

Sabbath Evening (Erev Shabbat) Family Service

(also Called “Erev Shabbat”, Hebrew for Evening of the Sabbath)

Throughout the week, we are all running to and fro. We are going to ballgames, work, school, and other events. The Erev Shabbat Service is a special service performed by the Jewish people for over 2,000 years. It would have been performed in the time of Jesus. It is a great way to welcome in the Sabbath as a family and make the dividing line between Holy Time of the Sabbath and the common time of the week we are leavening behind.

While it is mostly performed by Sabbath keepers with a Messianic background, it is a great learning tool for all Sabbath keepers. It is a way to speak life and blessing into your family. It is a great way to spend interactive time with your family.

Becoming Fervent in Thought Control

BECOMING FERVENT IN THOUGHT CONTROL

by Ernest P. Bergmann

“Verse 5 of 2 Corinthians 10 captured my attention. It tells us to bring into captivity every thought. What a challenge! My first question was, HOW? How can I react quickly enough to my thoughts to preclude them from becoming words? There are many dynamic situations in which we have no time to reflect on each thought and edit the evil ones.

Clearly, withholding troublesome thoughts is one meaning of this verse, but another meaning is plausible. In a more leisurely pace, we can capture each thought in the Bible and apply it, in effect, internalizing it.

Upon further reflection both viewpoints are indeed applicable. Let us examine the text and try to capture some if its meaning. Verse 1 “Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:”

Paul needed to awaken the Corinthians to Christ. They seemed to think Paul had two personalities; one when he spoke and one when he wrote. Apparently Paul was meek in person, but his writing was bold. Many can think more boldly…”

The Morality of the Sabbath

MoralityOfTheSabbath

The Morality of the Sabbath

By D.M. Canright

In this book, you will learn about the absolute morality of the Sabbath. It will provide a different perspective on the importance of the Sabbath. You will learn about the physical and spiritual aspects of the Sabbath that prove it is just as much apart of God’s spiritual law as the rest of the Ten Commandments. The body was designed for rest; in our fast-pace world, Godly rest will produce a harvest of results. Here’s an excerpt from pages 24-25:

Pages 24-25

“Thomas Sewell, M.D., professor of pathology and the practice of medicine in the Columbian College, Washington, D.C. says: ‘While I consider it the more important design of the institution of the Sabbath to assist in religious devotion and advance man’s spiritual welfare , I have long held the opinion that one of its chief benefits has reference to his physical and intellectual constitution; affording him, as it does, one day in seven for the renovation of his exhausted energies of body and mind – a proportion of time small enough, according to the results of my observation, for the accomplishment of this object…..I have no hesitation in declaring it as my opinion that, if the Sabbath were universally observed as a day of devotion and of rest from secular occupations, far more work of body and mind would be accomplished, and be better done; more health would be enjoyed, with more of wealth and independence, and we should have far less of crime and poverty and suffering…”

Are Men Fulfilling Their Responsibilities? (Part 2)

Are Men Fulfilling Their Responsibilities? (Part 2)
By Darl E. Arbogast

“Most Americans want to live in a nice quiet neighborhood where the good schools are located, where they have easy access to church and shops and they desire an easy commute to the work place. Everyone agrees that this is very desirable and for many Americans it works out just that way. Their children seem to be happy, well-adjusted and content.

Why do some children grow up under such undesirable circumstances where there is no contentment to be found in the home? Why do some families live in an undesirable frame of mind? The answers are because of the failure in the family structure. All of man’s ideas to improve on the family arrangement designed by God are not working.

There is an old saying, “Contentment makes poor men rich but discontentment makes rich men poor”.

According to Vines Complete Bible Dictionary, content can be a verb, a noun or an adjective. As a verb it primarily signifies “to be sufficient, to be strong, possess sufficient strength, to be enough for a thing, to be satisfied, contented with.”

We have been shown in the book of Genesis how Adam was not content, he was lonely and…”
