Nickolai Panchuck was a Sabbath-keeping minister in Communist Russia. He was arrested for his faith and refused to give up the names of his congregants. He was subsequently exiled to Siberia by the KGB. In this incredible, riveting story, you will learn how Nickolai kept his faith in God and the seventh-day Sabbath during the entirety of his imprisonment. His faith led to others believing in Jesus and eventually led to his release from prison.

“The first time Nickolai had been severely beaten by both Yuri and the warden. The second Sabbath they had locked him up in a box for 10 days. On the third time around would they finally give up, or would the persecutions continue?

Nickolai wondered how much worse things could get. The Sabbath was a special blessing from God. With all of his heart he wanted to honor the sacred day and the Creator God who had designed it….”

“December 1988: my last full month of employment at a large downtown Denver bank. A layoff wiped scores of employees’ names off the bank’s payroll, and mine was one of them. But I had a plan: Update my résumé, land some interviews, and find a job I really wanted. Prepared to hit the streets and find work, I hummed the tune “I’m living by faith and feel no alarm.”

But in time I did feel alarm — and other things besides, like discouragement, loneliness, and depression. No wonder: Severance pay and unemployment checks covered my bills but weren’t replenished by a paycheck. Businesses ready to hire turned me away or didn’t return my calls. I berated myself. Faith alone should get me through this job famine, right? I should be stronger, sure of God’s goodness to deliver. But some days I wondered if He cared or even knew what was going on…”

Knowing the Mind of God

If you want to come to know the mind of God, read the Gospels and the Prophets. This is not to say that the rest of the Bible isn’t inspired and profitable for doctrine and reproof. Indeed it all is, as Paul wrote to Timothy (II Timothy 3:16), but we need to understand what much of the Bible is.

Much of it is history, a recounting of things that happened without an endorsement of the actions of the characters, even the actions of the heroes of the Bible.

When Abraham banished Hagar and her son Ishmael into the desert, we should not take that as an example for us to follow. They could have died because of Abraham’s action, and likely would have had the Angel of the Lord not intervened.

When we read of societal chaos in the Book of Judges, we should recognize it as a reporting of events, not a reflection of the will of God.

Scripture needs to be read in full context in order to ascertain the God-intended understanding. A great example of this is Job. Much of that book presents Job’s three friends pontificating their very flawed theologies about God’s character. What they say might seem plausible enough, but in the end their perceptions prove to be narrow and oversimplified. It is only near the end of the book that we learn of God’s anger at Job’s three friends because “you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job” (Job 42:7). Here we’re told not to believe the things said about God in the prior chapters of that book.

And then there are the great, inspiring passages in the Hebrew Scriptures that reveal the hearts of sometimes hurting, often joyful, but always worshipful souls. Think of Psalms and Ecclesiastes. These passages help us in our relationship with God through the hearts of others.

Agreed that “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” But if you want a direct line into the mind of God, listen to what he says directly. You find that unfiltered in the Gospels and the Prophets.

Paul Honors the Sabbath with the Galatians

Acts 13:13-14, 42-45, 48

“13 From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down…”

Pisidian Antioch is in the region known as Galatia. While many of Paul’s letters were written to churches in a single city, his letter to the Galatians addressed believers in an entire region. We can clearly see that Paul practiced the Sabbath with Gentiles. Notice the content of Paul’s preaching:

 

Acts 13:28-30

“28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed….”30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.”

He preached about Jesus being the Messiah who died for the sins of mankind and then was raised from the dead. In all of this preaching about Christ’s death and resurrection, NOT ONCE did he mention it changing the day of worship away from the Sabbath. They continued to honor the Sabbath even after hearing this message.

Acts 13:42-45, 48

“42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God. 44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him… 48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.”

In Acts 13:43, He taught them to continue in the grace of God. In verse 44, they met on the Sabbath with Jews AND Gentiles. He taught them about the grace of God and then they continued to honor the Sabbath. He even taught them about grace as they obeyed the Sabbath, proving that grace and law are not contradictory ideals. Gentiles were there and received eternal life.

At any point in this visit, Paul could have announced that there was a new Sabbath or that it had been changed. He could have invited Gentiles to keep a “different Sabbath”, but he did not. The Sabbath always has been and always will be Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. This was honored by the earliest believers, both Jew and Gentile.
